Ethics in Music Communities

Community refers to a social group that is aligned by shared ideals, a group of individuals who affect one another in their interactions, a self-organized network of people with common causes, and a collective of individuals who enjoy collaboration. Musical communities are collectives of singers, instrumentalists, dancers, or some combination thereof, and characterized as those who genuinely enjoy the music they make. To understand musical communities takes looking into how they define themselves for behaviors and values they uphold. Community members share language, tradition, and etiquette. Musical communities form from the love of a musical practice and from the music that springs from a particular heritage. The musical identities of many communities are tied to their cultural heritage, and to their race and ethnicity. While these communities may be open to all who wish to participate, there is history behind them that marks their identity as a long-standing musical practice that is forged from a shared history. A collaborating coalition is allied in advancing the progress of learners in becoming culturally sensitive and socially responsible citizens through music.
